BBC is diving into science fiction with Sutherland, a six-part thriller set in both the beauty of Scotland and outer space.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Stuart Martin and Iain De Caestecker will lead the cast.

Set in the near future, the story kicks off in Sutherland, the northernmost part of Scotland, where Mbatha-Raw’s character Mirren is a flight director at the Paravel Space Hub.

Everything seems under control as the UK launches its first manned mission to the stars, but a sudden series of mysterious events quickly puts both the mission and Mirren’s ambitions in jeopardy.

Things get even more tangled when a long-buried conspiracy begins to emerge, drawing detective Logan, played by Martin, back into Mirren’s turbulent world.

The show is being made by World Productions Scotland (Vigil) with filming taking place on location in Scotland.

Sutherland will air on BBC iPlayer, BBC One and BBC Scotland in the UK. ITV Studios will distribute the series internationally.

Creator James Smythe said: “Sutherland is at heart a love story, a story of loss, a story of discovery – and a story that speaks to our collective desire to understand more about both what’s far above us, and what’s right at our feet.

“To be making a show for the BBC is a lifelong dream. To be doing it with the amazing team at World Productions, with this unfathomably good cast and our wonderful directors, is incredible to me.

“I can’t wait for audiences to see what we’ve come up with…”
