ITV has officially greenlit Believe Me, a four-part true crime drama from acclaimed screenwriter Jeff Pope.
The show will explore the real-life case of John Worboys, one of the UK’s most notorious serial attackers.
The series stars Aimée-Ffion Edwards, Miriam Petche, Aasiya Shah and Daniel Mays, and tells the story of three women who were assaulted by Worboys, a man who used his position as a black cab driver to target victims.
The drama follows not only the events of the attacks but also the aftermath, when the women’s reports were dismissed by the Metropolitan Police.
The series shows how their allegations were initially ignored, leaving Worboys free to continue his crimes.
It dives into the emotional toll this took on the victims and highlights how they later joined forces to take legal action against the police, in a landmark Human Rights Act case.
Written by Pope and directed by Julia Ford, Believe Me is being produced by Etta Pictures in association with ITV Studios, and will be filmed in Cardiff with support from the Welsh Government.
Jeff Pope said: “The series goes on an emotional journey with the victims of Worboys’ attacks, showing what happened to them when they reported being raped and assaulted, the pain and indignity of the process and how this de-humanised them. But most shocking of all is how they felt that not being believed by the police and having the attacks recorded, essentially, as non-crimes, was as traumatising for them as the actual assaults.”
In the UK, Believe Me will air on ITV1 and STV, and will also be available to stream on ITVX and STV Player.
International release details are to follow.
