Dame Joanna Lumley and Tobias Menzies are set to star in The Room in the Tower, this year’s spine-chilling Ghost Story for Christmas on the BBC.

Adapted and directed by Mark Gatiss, the drama is based on E.F. Benson’s unsettling tale and promises to deliver a haunting festive treat.

Set in the inter-war years, the story follows Roger Winstanley, a man plagued for 15 years by a recurring nightmare in which he is invited to spend the night at a country house, only to face a terror hidden in the infamous “room in the tower.”

When dream and reality begin to blur, Roger is forced to confront the horror head-on.

This is Gatiss’ eighth Ghost Story for Christmas for the BBC, following acclaimed adaptations of The Mezzotint, Count Magnus, and last year’s The Woman of Stone.

Alongside Lumley and Menzies, the cast features Nancy Carroll, Ben Mansfield, and Polly Walker.

Filming took place earlier this year at Cobham Hall in Kent.

Mark Gatiss, Writer and Director, said: “I’ve always wanted to adapt the great E.F. Benson’s ghost stories and this is one of his chilling best. I’m also very grateful to have been able to continue the most Christmassy of Christmas traditions.

“The Room in the Tower has been prepared for you – and with Tobias Menzies and the legendary Dame Joanna Lumley to boot!”

The Room in the Tower will air on BBC Two and iPlayer this December.
