Line of Duty is set to return for a seventh season, with Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar all back.

The show last aired in 2021, when the season six ending pulled in huge numbers on the BBC, making it one of the biggest drama moments in recent years.

The new six part run will film in Belfast in Spring 2026 and will be made by World Productions for BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK. It’s expected that the new episodes will be available on BritBox internationally.

In the new story the old AC12 unit has been closed and replaced by a new group called the Inspectorate of Police Standards. This makes their work harder than ever as Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming and Ted Hastings are handed a case that raises questions inside the force.

A well liked detective named Dominic Gough is said to have misused his role, but the team begins to wonder if this claim is hiding a larger problem behind the scenes.

With trust in short supply the group must find the truth while working in a system that no longer supports them.

Martin Compston said: “Line of Duty has been a job of a lifetime. Not only in terms of the show’s success but the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with I now call some of my closest friends. I can’t wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together.”

Vicky McClure added: “It goes without saying I’m so excited Line of Duty is back! Can’t wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we’ll see you soon!”

Adrian Dunbar commented: “As we count down the AC12 days of Christmas what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year. Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns.”
